Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) and hardware must be easy to configure and use if it is to be used and linked in a private home. Both characteristics increase the chance of the CPEs becoming established in the mass market, which then leads to the success of new Internet, multimedia and telephony services.

Automated configuration can support the creation of private networks. On behalf of T-Online, digicast analyzed existing standards and possibilities for creating a connection and evaluated various solutions for private users based on hardware, pre-configurations and the Internet. In addition, we evaluated proprietary and standardized network protocols like the CPE WAN Management Protocol (CWMP / TR-069) and the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).

One of the suggested solutions was the external management of networks by the Internet service provider (ISP). In this case, the end user devices are monitored by the central network management of the ISP and can be provided with the necessary updates like current virus detection for the firewall of the router or new software for the set-top box. In this way, the home network is optimized without bothering the user with administrative tasks.
